Greater than 150 passengers are feared lifeless following a ship accident in Niger state.
The ill-fated vessel previous to the incident carried over 300 passengers, principally girls and kids.
The incident occurred throughout a Maulid celebration journey on Tuesday.
POLITICS NIGERIA studies that the passengers have been touring from Mundi Neighborhood to Gbajibo Neighborhood for the Maulid pageant when the tragedy struck. In response to eyewitnesses, the boat was overloaded and struggled to remain afloat within the turbulent waters of River Niger.
Rescue operations are at the moment underway, with the Niger State Emergency Administration Company (NSEMA) coordinating efforts in partnership with the State Ministry of Transport, Mokwa Native Authorities Emergency Committee, native divers, and neighborhood volunteers.
Alhaji Absullahi Baba-Arah, Director Normal of NSEMA, confirmed the incident.
“NSEMA obtained a report of a ship accident that occurred on the evening of October 1, 2024, round 8:30 pm alongside River Niger, upstream of Jebba Dam, at Gbajibo Neighborhood in Mokwa LGA,” he stated.
