The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has condoled with the family of Nigeria’s First Republic Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amaechi who died at the age of 93.

Expressing pain over the death of the elder statesman who hailed from Ukpor in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State in the Southeast region of the country, Kanu described late Amaechi as a great man whom he had many fraternal interactions with.

Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, who disclosed the IPOB leader’s painful condolence when he (Ejimakor) visited him (Kanu) in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS) on Thursday said that Kanu recalled his closeness with Amaechi.

Ejimakor who disclosed Kanu’s condolence message on his Twitter account said, “Update: I just exited from seeing Onyendu #MNK. He’s pained by the passing of Pa Mbazulike Amaechi. He recalled how close they were & the many fraternal interactions between them in times past. He called him a “great man” and sent his heartfelt condolences to his family.”

The elder statesman had recently led a delegation of prominent Igbo leaders to Aso Rock where he made a case for Kanu who had been in detention since June 2021 after he was renditioned from Kenya by the Nigerian governor for continuation of his trial.

In May (2022), Amaechi also pleaded with armed groups to withdraw the sit-at-home order declared on May 5 and 6 in the region over the planned two-day visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to Ebonyi State.

He also pleaded with the unknown gunmen to withdraw the threat and avoid actions that would embarrass Ndigbo before President Buhari.

Amechi had also expressed hope that the planned visit of the President would offer an opportunity for Igbo elders to find solutions to the insecurity in the region and secure the release of Kanu. However, that did not come to pass before his death.
